About Me

I've been a lot of things in my life--a Park Ranger at the Grand Canyon, a Forest Lookout, a newspaper reporter, a Shakespearean repertory theater actor in Cleveland, San Francisco, Colorado and Idaho, a historical linguist with a degree in Cultural Anthropology--but in the end nothing has given me as much joy and satisfaction as photographing Arizona's stunning natural wonders for a living.

Starting in 1989, I have worked primarily as a freelancer for Arizona Highways Magazine, mainly in the Mogollon Rim country where I live, pioneering photography of some of the most rugged and least-known areas in the state. The Mazatzal Wilderness, Four Peaks Wilderness, Cabeza-Prieta
National Wildlife Refuge, the extreme and wildly beautiful slot canyons of Fossil Creek, West Clear Creek, Hellsgate, and Devils Chasm.
I love photographing people as well, and occasionally undertake commercial assignments, shooting events, weddings, portraits, architecture and food.
My work has appeared in Arizona Highways Magazine, their books and calendars, Sports Afield, America West Magazine, Reminisce, Sunset, Scientific American.
My commercial clients include Arizona Public Service, Arizona State University, the Morrison Institute, the Anasazi Foundation, Phoenix Faerie Festival, Safeway Corporation.
I live in a log cabin in Pine, Arizona, beneath the towering Mogollon Rim, with my girlfriend Su, who's an artist and a dancer (see our other website: mayajoydancers.com), her dog Kooter, and a finicky cat named Ramzey.

Over the years, I have shot in a wide variety of photographic formats, ranging from 4x5 large format camera to medium format to currently digital. Some, such as the 4x5s, can be enlarged quite big, even wall-size. Others can only go up to 16x20 and some only 11x14 or 8x10. If you are interested in ordering prints please contact me about which images you're interested in (stating the full caption/title for each picture) and what sizes you'd prefer. I'll then let you know if that size is appropriate for the image.
My print prices for unmounted archival prints on ultrapremium luster or semi-gloss stock are:
